Miss. Sanford's First Grade Class
My Philosophy: Since every child learns differently, using multiple styles of teaching to reach the needs of all of my students will be most beneficial. To meet these needs, daily lessons will incorporate the three main learning styles- visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. I am so excited to be working in a small-group setting, and personalizing my lessons to accommodate each and every first grade student.
First Grade Curriculum
Religion: In addition to a weekly school mass, students meet three times a week for a 30 minute multi-aged religion class. Religion is also integrated into the daily curriculum across subject areas.
Language Arts: The first grade curriculum for language arts covers the areas of phonics, spelling, reading, writing, and handwriting.
*In addition to the textbooks in these areas, first grade students participate in daily literacy centers to enhance the textbook learning. These centers are literacy-based, using a wide range of classroom technology that provides a hands-on approach at learning.
Math: GO Math! is organized around the Critical Areas at each grade level of the Common Core State Standards. This focus ensures students are spending the right amount of time on the right content. This math program allows students to build upon each Critical Area as the students reach new grade levels.
*In addition to GO Math!, first grade students at St. Damian School participate daily in Rocket Math, a program designed for instant math fact recognition in both addition and subtraction that focuses on an individual level.
Science: The first grade curriculum for science covers the areas of life, earth, and physical science. Students will learn about the earth, plants, animals, astronomy, weather, seasons and basic physics.
*In addition to the textbook for this subject area, students are exposed to supplemental units on nutrition, the human body, and life cycles.
Social Studies: The first grade curriculum for social studies covers the areas of communities, laws and leaders, work, needs and wants, spending and saving, transportation, earth resources, and our country.
