Welcome to Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is a year of great challenge and growth for all children. Students will grow in their faith and be challenged to perform their best in school in a safe and caring environment. They will also have the opportunity to develop their character and leadership skills through the many opportunities here at St. Damian Catholic School.
Our religion studies center around the Venture weekly magazine. Each issue includes the upcoming Sunday Gospel, with a feature on how to live the Gospel. There are many interactive plays, puzzles and questions that engage the students. We will also study the liturgical year as well as the seasons of the Church. The students will attend school Mass on Fridays.
In Language Arts students will read and respond to all genres of literature including historical fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy, folk tale, biography, and non-fiction. In English students will develop writing skills using the writing process to write a story, a personal narrative, reports and essays. We also study the usage and mechanics of grammar.
In math, students will learn the properties of multiplication and division, find equivalent fractions, add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. We will also study decimal products, sums, and quotients, and study geometry as well as work on problem solving skills.
Social studies begins with studying the United States government and the free enterprise system. We will also study the early settlement of the U.S. and the founding of the 13 colonies, the American Revolution and the events that led to the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
Science in fifth grade includes using the scientific method to perform experiments. We will study life science, physical science and earth science.
