Religion
First Quarter
Students will learn about how Jesus teaches us about God’s love. In addition they will learn about the Blessed trinity, how God’s our father, Jesus’ family, how Jesus helps us, how he teaches us about love, and the church.
Second Quarter
Students will learn that we are followers of Jesus. In addition, they will learn about Jesus’ followers, the resurrection, how Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, Advent, Christmas, and how the Holy Spirit helps us.
Third Quarter
Students will learn about how the church serves its community. In addition, they will learn about Lent, belonging to a parish, celebrating the sacraments, the three days, Easter, and welcoming new members into the church.
Fourth Quarter
Students will learn that we are followers of Jesus, how we celebrate God’s forgiveness, how Jesus gives us the Eucharist, how we celebrate the mass, sharing God’s love, honoring the saints and Mary, caring for God’s creation, and how to share our faith.
Math
First Quarter
Students will learn about numbers, number words to twenty, ordinal numbers and the introduction of addition strategies and facts to 12.
Second Quarter
Students will learn subtraction strategies and facts to 12, the importance of data, graphs, and using operations (Venn diagrams, real graphs, bar graphs, pictographs, picture graphs), and place value to 100 (skip counting by 2, 5, and 10, tens and ones).
Third Quarter
Students will learn about addition and subtraction facts and strategies to 20. Students will learn about patterns, two and three dimensional shapes, and the attributes of geometric figures. Students will be introduced to money and counting on with the values of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters counting up to $1.00. They will also learn how to tell time in analog and digital to the hour and half hour.
Fourth Quarter
Students will learn to measure with standard and non standard units, addition and subtraction of two digit numbers, and learn about probability and fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4).
Social Studies
First Quarter
Students will learn why school is important, the difference and similarities in rules at home and school, and learn about St. Damian.
Second Quarter
Students will learn about their community, different kinds of communities, the special things we do, community laws and leaders, and where we are located in the world. Students will learn about work, needs and wants, spending and saving money, and various types of transportation.
Third Quarter
Students will learn about our earth and resources, the various types of weather, land and water, earth’s resources, farm history, and taking care of our earth.
Fourth Quarter
Students will learn about our country: Native Americans, travelers, colonies, symbols of the U.S., and how we celebrate holidays and choose our leaders. Students will learn about our country, our world: markets, how things have changed, inventors, inventions, how travel has changed, and life around the world.
Science
First Quarter
Life Science: Students will learn about living things and their characteristics, look at plants, and a look at animals.
Second Quarter
Life and Earth Science: Students will learn how animals meet their needs, learn about the sky, clouds, constellations, and planets, the various types of weather and seasons, and how to care for our natural resources.
Third Quarter
Earth and Physical Science: Students will learn how to take care of the earth, learn how to describe and measure matter, and the various changes it goes through.
Fourth Quarter
Physical Science: Students will learn about force, motion, magnets, and sound.
***Supplemental Units are added throughout the year, these change, and some examples are: the body, teeth, and the life cycle (hatching chicks, or butterflies). ***
Language Arts
Handwriting
First and Second Quarter
Students will be introduced to the proper hand and seating position, they will also learn the importance of all upper and lower case letters with slanting, spacing, and size.
Third Quarter
Students will review all the letters with proper formation.
Fourth Quarter
Students will apply what they have learned and use it in writing prominent bible versus.
Phonics/Spelling/Reading
First Quarter
Students will learn spelling, and sounds of short a,i, u, digraphs ck, th, sh, blends sl, sm, sn, fl, fr, ll, ss. Students will also review the initial, medial, and ending sounds of words along with rhyming. All stories will incorporate the above focus.
Second Quarter
Students will learn spelling, and sounds of short o, e, blends: st, sk, sp, br, pl, pr, cr, tw, fl, ll, mp, tw, and digraphs: ch, wh, nk. All stories will incorporate the above focus.
Third Quarter
Students will be introduced to the long vowel sounds, with a silent e at the end, in addition they will learn and become familiar with long a with the spelling of ay, and ai.
Fourth Quarter
Students will learn long e spelled: ee, ie, ea, long o spelled: oa, oe, ow, long i spelled i, y, igh, variant u /oo/, a, /ar/, and ur, /ur, er, ir/.
English
First Quarter
Students will learn about the various parts of a sentence and the proper steps in writing a class story.
Second Quarter
Students will learn about nouns, pronouns, and how to write a personal narrative. Students will revisit the writing guidelines of prewriting, revise, rewrite, and publish.
Third Quarter
Students will learn about adjectives and how to write a good description, they will learn to write a friendly letter and a book report.
Fourth Quarter
Students will practice capitalization of title, people, days of the week, and other proper nouns. Children will practice writing instructions, express an opinion through writing, e-mail, and a research report.
