ST. DAMIAN & ST. THEODORE & DIVINE SAVIOR
JUNIOR HIGH YOUTH MINISTRY PROGRAM
FOR GRADES 7 & 8
WHO DOES THE PROGRAM MINSTER TO?
The Junior High Youth Ministry program is open to all seventh and eighth graders of both the school and religious education program at St. Damian. There is no charge to join.
WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM PROVIDE?
This voluntary program gives junior high youth the opportunity to go and serve by being the hands and feet of Christ and actively witness their Christian faith. The youth also get the opportunity to meet other youth by attending team-building events with other junior high youth throughout the Western Wayne, Northern Wayne, and Dearborn Vicariates.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU MEET?
We have junior high meetings once a month from October - May. Meetings are held on either Friday or Saturday nights from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. the community room. Dates are subject to change depending on what other parish, CYO sports, or school activities are planned at that time. Meetings dates are announced in advance.
WHAT DO YOU DO AT A JUNIOR HIGH MEETING?
At every meeting, we have an icebreaker, prayer, songs, and snack. Every Meeting has a different theme. Meetings involve interactive learning and every meeting has a different theme.
WHAT TYPE OF COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENTS DO YOU OFFER?
We participate in a variety of community service events, which include the following:
· Serving dinner monthly at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen on Warren and Connor in Detroit where the youth serve meals to many parents and young children in need.
· Working at the Capuchin Service Center where they sort donated clothing and make food baskets to create a dignified shopping experience for those in need like all of us expect when we go shopping for food and clothing.
· Work at Gleaner’s Food Bank sorting pallets of food donated from Kroger’s and other local businesses. Gleaners take in all the surplus food that stores would throw away and give them to organizations in need.
· We sponsor a monthly bingo night at Four Chaplains Nursing Center. The youth are the bingo callers, they sit and help the residents play bingo, and pass out all of the bingo prizes that our parishioners graciously donate.
WHAT TYPE OF TEAM BUILDING EVENTS DO YOU OFFER?
Some examples of events we participated in this year include a Halloween Hayride Barndance, Los Posados Event, Whirlyball, Cosmic Bowling, and a Detroit Tiger Game.
